Success's Sweet Sting Crossbody Tote
In 2018, when I started making my fabric designs for The Spirit Treaties, I was conceptually working within established paradigms. The idea that art is rare and precious; that art is something for fancy peoplewho go to galleries. I was doing something "special" by making textiles that belonged in the future. The more I thought about that idea, the more my spirits pushed back.
Around that time, I also grew tired of seeking permission from traditional art spaces. I realized that my work was often financially out of reach for the very people they were made to uplift. In 2018, I founded, Mmmm, Yes!, to bypass these gatekeepers.
My designs are created specifically for the queer, Black diaspora. By translating my gallery concepts into everyday apparel, and home furnishings, I ensure that my community can adorn themselves and their intimate spaces with culturally resonant art. I create because we are people of color with rich, complex, and vibrant lives, and we deserve to live artfully every single day.
Mmmm normalizes new Black aesthetics by manifesting diaspora designs, and a uniquely Black womanist voice in our homes, home furnishings and on the go. Mmmm Yes! guarantees that everyone can have a piece of Black art to adorn themselves or their home. Because we deserve to see ourselves everywhere, and most especially at home.
