Special Sauce is a cycle of plays following The Holder family through generations of queerness and the Black experience.
The Holder family is something extra special - a long line of rabble rousing conjures, they are active with creating a lasting family legacy. Each play happens at a moment requiring direct ancestral intervention.
The first short play in the cycle is Bolognese. Baby Girl thinks she has found the love of her life, but, her ancestors Ultima, Grand D and Nana Ilsa aren't so sure she's going about developing the relationship properly.
Special Sauce: Bolognese was staged at the Glitterbox Theater in 2025. Springer drew from the excellent talents of members from the dynamic queer youth theater group, Dreams Of Hope.
Currently in draft one, we have moved on to Baby girl's cousin, Winsom, as she grapples with her wife, Gloria's infidelity.
Sometimes the ancestor's mess becomes yours. In this play, Nana Ilsa uncovers some dirt that Pop Selwyn and Grand D have hidden. This little secret is having generational impact. They need to put things to right.
Currently brewing is Jerk. Big Boy - whom we've heard so much about in previous plays - needs direct intervention completely unrelated to his constant internet beefs with paleros, olorishas, hougans and hoodoos. Big Boy runs and owns the primary interest in the family's bar, Parlor. Parlor has come under attack from gentrifiers and he is on the precipice of losing a historical community gathering space that has been in the family for four generations.
